A steady breeze flipped flags throughout Hillsboro and the surrounding area on Friday for Flag Day. Tom and Laurie Koslowsky at 406 Oak Street in Hillsboro created this particularly patriotic setting that was set off by brilliant afternoon sunshine.


Depression-era glass was made from 1929 to 1940 by 28 known companies, located mostly in the Ohio River Valley. Donovan Schmidt of rural Goessel became interested in collecting the glassware after refinishing an old cabinet and remembering his mother’s American Sweetheart set. He said prices of the collectibles depended on pattern, color, and quality.


Kevin Nickel enjoys training in places where his children Coryn and Stephan can play. His wife, Yvette, leads a strong support team for the top-ranked Kansas triathlon competitor. Nickel is a Goessel High School and Tabor College alumnus and often runs and rides his bicycle on Marion County roads.

The men have been playing together for almost 25 years and compete in a local league with other senior citizens.
