Employees of Handex of Wichita are pictured using a drill at the location of the former Coastal Mart convenience store at 111 E. Main, Marion. They are retrieving soil and water samples in and around underground fuel storage tanks to determine if contamination from the tanks occurred.

Five Marion High School students are among 5,200 University of Kansas who received scholarships from personal gifts during the fall 2003 semester. They are Eliza Bennett, Hannah Bennett, Shawn Markley, Melissa Moffitt, and Bailey Skiles. Centre High School students who received scholarships are Colleen Belton and David Rziha.

Mike Jeffrey, owner of Mike’s Service, is a participant in donating free fuel to local Highway Patrol troopers during the holidays. This is the 13th year for the program sponsored by the Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association of Kansas.

A neighborhood Christmas gathering was held Dec. 19 at the home of Bea and Forrest Kelsey. It also was a farewell party for Randee and Larry Loomis, who are moving to Manhattan. Hosts were the Kelseys and Eloise and Earl Mueller.

The family of Jackie Hett held its 17th annual Christmas gathering at the Red Coach Inn, Wichita.
