Inspired at a retreat last spring, Valley United Methodist Church members Lydia Gates and Margaret Wilson have collected 58 pounds of bar soap to donate to Clean the World, a global recycling program that sends hygiene items to homeless shelters, impoverished communities, and disaster sites.

Inspired after competing in a Wichita triathlon, Sarah Dye and Shawna Johnson are organizing the Ready, Set, Tri triathlon planned for Aug. 27 at Marion County Park and Lake. Participants will swim 500 meters, ride bicycles for eight miles, and then run for five kilometers.
Kate Bashore of Centre is running to be state editor of the Future Business Leaders of America and has been authorized by the Centre school board to spend up to $800 in district money to promote her campaign, which will have a Tony the Tiger theme, including the slogan: “Vote for Kate, she’s grrreat!”
Kourtney Hansen of Marion High School made the Heart of America girls’ all-league basketball team for the 2015-’16 season. Honorable mentions went to girls Kirsten Hansen, Erika Hess, and Bailey Robson and to boys Mason Pederson and Jack Schneider.
