The great national victory won by Republicans in this presidential campaign, Winfield Hancock vs. James Garfield, is doubly gratifying in the fact that it was won without a resort to the miserable means used by the opposition to blacken the character of Gen. Garfield.

If the RECORD exhibits a trifle too much exuberance of feeling this week, please remember that it was an original Garfield paper, and has a personal as well as political pride in the result.

General Hancock was wise in one thing: He didn’t resign his Major General’s commission. “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”

The election is over and we are glad of it. Now bring on your big pumpkins and your mammoth productions of all kinds. Our agricultural editor is now ready to supersede the political fellow. Let everyone shake hands across the bloody chasm.

The ladies of the Methodist Society have ordered an organ which they will have on hand and paid for by the time the new church is ready to receive it. The ladies are doing nobly.
