2 state champions top week in sports

A busy week in sports was topped by Marion County students winning state championships in powerlifting.

Peabody-Burns junior Jefferson Glover won the combined title in the boys heavyweight class, and Goessel freshman Abbigail Funk won in the 105-pound girls class in an event sponsored by Kansas Eight-Man Football Association.

Goessel girls also placed first and boys second at a track meet for mainly Class 1A and 2A schools at Norwich, and Goessel golfers won a three-team Remington Invitational.

Hillsboro baseball and softball swept Nickerson in doubleheaders Friday.

In the second game of the baseball doubleheader, Phillip Young threw one hitter with seven strikeouts.

Matt Potucek, Jaxxon Hanschu, Hunter Navrat, and Alex Caldwell each had multiple hits in the opener. Navrat and Young did in the second game.

Marion swimmers placed third and won the 200-meter freestyle relay in an eight-team meet for which they were hosts.

Hillsboro’s Emersyn Funk won the 3,200-meter run at Halstead, and other Marion and Hillsboro athletes made what coaches rated as significant progress, scoring several personal bests.

As Marion coach Grant Thierolf put it: “With the wind blowing as it was, it was not the best conditions for a great meet, but we did a pretty good job of hanging in there and working to get better. This was a tough one for our team, but a great one for the competition.”
