2 Trojans win multiple medals at state
Sophomore Wes Shaw and junior Kaden Ward each medaled in multiple events to lead Hillsboro’s 12 athletes at this week’s state track and field meet in Wichita.
“We had an exceptional two days of competition,” coach Dennis Boldt said. “Our community should be extremely proud of these young people. Those athletes returning next year will be able to build upon a great foundation from this year.”
Wes placed third in shot put with a heave of 52 feet 11¾ inches and seventh in discus with a throw of 143 feet.
Kaden finished sixth in high jump with a leap of 6 feet, seventh in pole vault with a vault of 12 feet 6 inches, and ninth in long jump with a best of 19 feet 4½ inches.
Junior Sienna Kaufman placed fourth in pole vault with a vault of 9 feet 6 inches and narrowly missed medaling in long jump with a ninth-place leap of 15 feet 9 inches.
Senior Jonathan Hinerman earned a medal by placing eighth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:44.35.
Other individual finishes included junior Abby Sechrist, 13th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:35.65; and senior Brooklyn Wiens, 15th in discus, with a throw of 91 feet 4 inches.
The boys’ 4x400 relay team finished 13th and the girls’ 4x800 relay team finished 15th.
