2nd straight title comes in straight sets

Sweeping through pool play and tournament bracket, Hillsboro became Class 2A’s back-to-back state volleyball champions Saturday.

Without losing a single set, Hillsboro defeated Maranatha Christian Academy, Sedan, and Smith Center on Friday.

In the semifinals Saturday, the Trojans defeated Inman, holding the Teutons to 32 points total in two sets.

In the championship game, Hoxie was able to score only 33 points total, enabling the Trojans to be repeat state champions.

“Hoxie was playing some really good volleyball on Friday, so we expected them to stay hot on Saturday,” coach Sandy Arnold said. “But our girls and coaches discussed how we felt we were prepared due to our league and tournament schedules.”

Seniors Zaylee Werth, Savannah Shahan, and Anslee Brewer were teams leaders and helped younger teammates throughout the season.

Hillsboro often had a lot of freshman and sophomores on the court.

“We will miss these senior girls,” Arnold said. “They brought a lot of power, experience, competitive drive, and volleyball knowledge to the team.

“The expectations on this group of girls was high from the start, and I couldn’t be more proud of the way they handled themselves throughout the season — through both the good and the bad times.

“Not only are they great volleyball players, but also great kids. They are champions both on and off the court.”
