Three of five county teams notched victories in Week 3 this football season.
Marion
The Warriors defeated Hutch Trinity at home Friday night by three scores, 36-12.
Coach Jackson Schneider said he thought practices leading up to the game were the best so far this season.
“As a coaching staff we have been preaching that the team needs to attack each day with more energy and excitement,” he said. “They finally had a good consistent week of that.”
Quarterback Jymer Rayer completed eight passes on 11 attempts for two touchdowns. Slot back Isaac Wesner was on the receiving end of both touchdowns.
Raymer also was credited for one rushing touchdown.
Jordy Raymer also had a rushing touchdown on 14 carries for 54 yards.
Tripp Peterson rushed for a short, five-yard touchdown.
Schneider said the team’s defense was what led to the offense’s success.
“I thought we played excellent defense besides one poor tackling drive early, and then finally got into rhythm as an offense really for the first time this season,” Schneider said.
Marion (2-1) will travel to Chaparral (3-0) for its next game Friday.
Centre
Centre football ran away with its game Thursday against Altoona-Midway, winning 55-7 in a contest that was cut short at halftime via a 45-point rule.
The Cougars’ Micah Carlson scored three rushing touchdowns on 105 yards for the game.
Noah Brunner caught two touchdowns through the air as well as returning an interception 50 yards for another score.
Centre found more ways to score as Kole Kroupa returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown.
The Cougars (2-1) will hit the road Friday for a game against Marais des Cygnes Valley (2-1).
“Starting the season 2-1 gives us something to build on, but we know we have a very tough Marais des Cygnes Valley team coming up Friday,” coach Thieen Antoszyk said. “We’ll need to have a good week of practice, stay focused, and be ready to play our best football.”
Peabody-Burns
Peabody-Burns traveled Thursday to Elyria Christian night and won, 52-6.
Jameson Miles was on the receiving end of two touchdowns and recovered a fumble for a 40-yard scoop and score.
Ashton Talkington also scored two receiving touchdowns.
Brodix Renolds scored a receiving touchdown while Colin Groff and Bentley Taylor both rushed for a touchdown each.
Aiden Hurst completed 7-of-13 passing attempts, which was good for 171 yards and five touchdowns.
The Warriors (2-1) will be at home Friday against Southern Coffey County (0-3).
Hillsboro
Hillsboro lost on the road Friday night to Haven, 28-12.
Coach Demetrius Cox said the second half against the Wildcats showed flashes of what this team could be.
“We had some positive moments, but too many inconsistencies kept us from playing at the standard we expect,” he said.
Broden Loewen scored the Trojans’ first touchdown of the game late in the third quarter on a five-yard scamper.
Quarterback Zayne Haslett later found Talon Regier with 56 seconds left on the clock for Hillsboro’s second touchdown of the game.
Hillsboro (1-2) will be back in Joel Wiens Stadium for its homecoming game Friday against Remington (2-1).
“We don’t have a lot of room for error as we begin district play this Friday at home against Remington,” Cox said. “Our focus now has to be on correcting the details, improving this week, and being ready to play our best football when Friday night arrives.”
Goessel
After Hartford scored the first touchdown during Goessel’s game Friday, Kyle Repshire gave the Bluebirds hope when he recovered a fumble, but the possession ended with a punt.
Goessel trailed 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.
It was all Hartford in the second period, scoring four touchdowns with the Bluebirds unable to cross the goal line. The Jaguars led 38-0 at halftime.
On the door-step of losing via a 45-point rule, Goessel denied an extra-point attempt to keep its deficit at 44-0 in the third quarter.
Claudio Flores III later intercepted a pass at the eight yard line, and the Bluebirds put together several first downs.
Brayton Base hit Gage Abbott for a pass, advancing the ball to the Hartford 12 yard line.
Flores found a seam in the Jaguars’ defense and scored from 11 yards to give the Bluebirds their first score of the night.
With 5:42 remaining in the game, Hartford scored on a three-yard pass play and converted the extra points to end the game at 52-6.
Goessel (1-1) will next play Burlingame (0-2) for an away district game Friday.
