3 schools triumph, 2 others struggle

Staff writer

Marion county teams struggled and triumphed at home and on the road as Hillsboro High enjoyed a hot streak, Goessel High’s boys picked up two wins, and Peabody one more for the season.

Both Marion and Centre High teams posted losses as Marion struggled on the road against Sterling and Centre fell to Herington during homecoming.

Trojan streak continues

You’d have to go back to December for the last time the Hillsboro High School boys lost a basketball game, and last month for the girls.

Both Trojan teams have climbed to the number two spot in Kansas Basketball Coaches  Association Rankings.

Hillsboro capped off another perfect week at 4-0 with a road test Friday at Pratt.

The Greenback boys gave the Trojans a scare, but Hillsboro won its 12th straight game, outlasting Pratt, 45-40.

The win lifts Hillsboro to 12-2 on the year.

The Trojan girls got a balanced scoring attack from the senior trio of Teagan Werth, Jessica Saunders, and Kinsey Kleiner, building a 27-13 lead at halftime and stretching it to 50-22 midway through the fourth quarter.

Werth scored a game-high 15 points, Saunders added 13, and Kleiner supplied 11 in the 55-25 win to improve to 13-2.

The Trojan defense limited the Greenbacks to a frigid 16% shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers in the contest.

Marion falls to Sterling

Marion’s still looking to get back on track and Friday night at Sterling offered little chance for redemption, with the girls facing Class 2A’s top team and the boys going up agains the Black Bears’ the high-flying Tyus Wilson.

The boys dropped their sixth consecutive game in a 63-35 setback.

The Warrior girls fell to 1-13 on the year with the Black Bears prevailing 74-38.

Peabody-Burns splits

Peabody-Burns basketball team is also ranked seventh in Class 1AII, but went 1-1 on the week.

The Warriors whipped Rural Vista 73-37 Tuesday, but fell to 10-4 Friday with a 60-44 road loss at Solomon.

Centre disappointed

Centre High’s homecoming games Friday were a disappointment for both teams. Centre girls lost to Herington, 65-33, and Centre boys lost, 56-40.

As the girls struggled to score, excellent shooting from both the 2-point and 3-point range by Herington put the Railers in the driver’s seat. Centre trailed at halftime and finished with a 32-point loss.

Things looked hopeful for Centre’s boys in the first half. They led 10-1 after one quarter, but Herington got hot from the 3-point range in the second quarter and sliced Centre’s lead to just two points by halftime.

Lane Methvin scored 25 points and had nine rebounds. Mikey Silhan scored 7 points, and Luke Hudson had 14 rebounds and four steals.

Goessel boys win two

The Goessel boys picked up their fifth win in the Wheat State League with a victory at Elyria Christian on Friday.

Goessel led by six at the end of one quarter, but the Eagles tied at 13.

The Bluebirds built a 24-17 lead at the half. Elyria got as close as 30-28 in the third quarter, but the Bluebirds were able to rebound well in the fourth period, allowing the home team only one shot on each possession.

In spite of 19 turnovers by the end of the third period, the Bluebirds hung on to a 32-28 lead.

Goessel won by a final score of 48-37. Three Bluebirds hit double digits in scoring with Caiden Duerksen and Nate Zogleman each getting 13 and Skyler Wuest scoring 11. Eddie Gaeddert hit 5 points, Jake Hiebert scored 4, and Caleb Burkholder dropped in 2.

On Tuesday, the Goessel boys won their game against Centre 60-34.

The score was tied 12-12 at the end of the first quarter and Centre hit a three-pointer early in the second quarter to lead for the last time in the game. With scoring from Skyler Wuest, Caiden Duerksen and Nate Zogleman, the Bluebirds went on a 13-2 run to grab control of the game. Goessel led at half-time 31-23. Luke Hudson led the Cougars with 17 points.

Scoring for the Bluebirds: Caiden Duerksen 23 (season high), Skyler Wuest 19, Nate Zogleman 8, Jake Hiebert 4, Dawson Stutzman 4 and Kacen Smith 2.

The Goessel boys are 5-0 in the Wheat State League and 9-5 overall.

Turnovers plagued the Bluebird girls offense against the trapping defense at Elyria on Friday.

The Bluebirds did not score in the second quarter as the Eagles led at half-time 19-7. Elyria increased their lead in every quarter and won by a final score of 44-20.

Lyna Lehrman led the Bluebirds with 7 points, followed by Kaleigh Guhr with 5, Elizabeth Schmucker 3, Emily Flaming 2, Bethany Herrel 2 and Hailey Lowrance with 1 point.

Ten girls scored for the Bluebirds on Tuesday, but it was not enough to win against Centre. The final score was 44-38.

Centre’s ability to control the rebounds allowed them to lead by as many as seven points 32-25 with three minutes to play in the third quarter. Goessel turned up the intensity and clawed their way back into the game with points from Jaicee Griffin, Cheyenne Sawyer, Braylyn Hoopes and Lyna Lehrman, to get as close as 34-33. The Cougars hit key free-throws in the fourth quarter to seal their victory.

Scoring for Goessel: Lyna Lehrman 9, Cheyenne Sawyer 6, Elizabeth Schmucker 5, Rachael Zoglemen 4, Jaicee Griffin 4, Kaleigh Guhr 3, Sarah Spurlin 2, Bethany Herrel 2, Emily Flaming 2 and Braylyn Hoopes 1.
