3rd-ranked Trojans win 7th straight

Staff writers

The third-ranked Trojan girls are setting themselves up for a top seed at next week’s sub-state, reeling off seven straight wins.

Hillsboro hasn’t lost since the third-place game of the Trojan Classic last month, and Friday’s visitor, the Lyons Lions, weren’t able to challenge them.

That was evident with the Trojans rolling to a 51-24 victory on senior night, boosting their record to 16-3.

The best thing Lyons could muster was trailing 8-5 after the first quarter. Hillsboro stepped on the gas and doubled the Lions over, 20-10, by halftime.

The Trojans pushed the lead to 37-22 heading into the fourth quarter, and Trojan coach Micah Ratzlaff used his bench to cruise to the finish line.

Zaylee Werth scored a game-high 15 points to go along with five steals as the Trojans turned the Lions over 16 times.

Savannah Shahan added 10 points, and senior Kori Arnold put in 8 more in her final regular-season home game.

The Trojans limited Lyons to a cool 24% shooting as Hillsboro hit nearly 50% in the second half for 39% on the night.

“It was a great senior night playing well and getting the win,” Ratzlaff said. “I want to thank our seniors for their hard work and dedication to this program.

“But the job is not over yet and they know that. We look forward to finishing off the regular season at Hoisington and a chance to go undefeated in league play and get some momentum rolling into sub-state.”

Goessel recovers

It appeared the Bluebirds would have an easy time Friday with Central Christian Academy.

Goessel led 10-4 with dominating defense, but the Lions took advantage of missed shots and grabbed a 17-16 lead.

In the last 57 seconds of the first half, Abbigail Funk scored 6 points and Riley Graber connected on two free-throws and Goessel went to the locker room with a 24-17 lead.

The Bluebirds dominated the third quarter and led 41-25. The offense continued to produce points in the fourth as Goessel sailed to a 61-29 victory.

Senior Riley Graber ended with a season high 17 points. Abbigail Funk had 12.

Goessel sports an 11-8 record with one game left in the regular season. The Bluebirds will play Thursday at Canton in the first round of the sub-state.

Centre overrun

Despite an effort-filled performance, Centre’s girls got behind early, 16-8, in Friday’s game against Chase County at Cottonwood Falls.

The gap widened, finishing with a disastrous 17-3 deficit in the fourth quarter. Centre lost, 54-22.

Sophomores Olivia Carlson and Hailey Barton again were the top Centre scorers. Carlson scored 10 points including four of five free throws. Barton scored 9.

The Cougars ended the regular season with a record of 3-17. They will play 6-13 Burrton at 7 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the sub-state tournament at Burrton.

Marion falls short

The Warriors lost their last home game of the regular season Friday 43-29 to Elyria Christian.

The first and second quarter were the best they had looked all season, but they fell behind in the second half.

“Our Achilles heel all season has been stretches of games where we cannot score and turn it over, and it hurt us against tonight,” coach Jason Hett said.

Grace Hett led all scorers with 8 points, followed by Kenna Wesner, and Erin Regnier, with 6 each.
