David R. Montgomery, son of Dave Montgomery of Marion and a graduate of Marion High School and the United States Naval Academy, has been selected for advancement to the rank of captain in the United States Navy.

Capt. Montgomery commands the USS George Washington Carver, a fleet ballistic missile submarine which operates out of Holy Loch, Scotland.

Marion senior end Kevin Jirak is pictured as he places the Homecoming Queen crown on the head of Tammy Sandwell, Marion High School senior, in pre-game ceremonies Friday night at Marion Stadium. Queen candidate runners-up were Gena Helmer and Lanell Tajchman.

Nettie Williams has been named “Women of the Year” by the local Business & Professional Women’s Club chapter. A charter member of the club, she has held every office in the club except treasurer.

Terry Bradshaw, quarterback for the world champion Pittsburgh Steelers, is trying his skills at Quarter Horse scouting. Bradshaw was in Canton Oct. 14 inspecting stallion Quarter Horses at the Duane Walker ranch. The Walkers will hold their annual production sale Nov. 1.

Nineteen Marion High School juniors published a special edition of the school newspaper Friday as the culminating activity of a three-week unit on the newspaper.

The eight-page “Warrior County News” was written by students in Penny Wika’s fifth hour English II class.
