Sub-zero temperatures kept city crews in Marion and Florence busy through the first part of the week with reports of frozen pipes and water meters.

Marion County has been selected as part of a regional flight path for B-52 and F-111 training exercises. The low-level flights, to be conducted from Jan. 25 through June 11, will be conducted by the Strategic Air Command of the Air Force.

The flight path enters Marion County just west of Burns and runs northwest to a point about a mile west of Durham. None of the flights will be scheduled directly over towns.

Father Emil Kapaun, a native of Pilsen is the subject of another book. The latest book, “Believed to be Alive,” is by Captain John W. Thornton, who like Father Kapaun was a prisoner of War. The story of Father Kapaun is told in the epilogue of Thornton’s book about combat and captivity during the Korean War.

Three recent graduates of Emporia State University from this area have been hired for a variety of positions. Rhonda Williams Heerey, Florence, has been hired as a math teacher at Bishop Carroll High School in Wichita; Dan Helmer, Marion, will be an asphalt sales representative for Pester Refining Co. of El Dorado; and Kelly Groening, Hillsboro, will be an accountant for Koch Industries, Wichita.

Marion senior Stan Williams is pictured at the basketball game at Centre Friday night as he awaits a pass from Bryan Hess. Williams scored 14 points and hit the boards for 15 rebounds. Williams, Hess, and Tom Schaffer lead Marion to a 67-43 win over the Cougars, first win of the season for the Warriors.
