Money was a major concern and topic of discussion at Monday’s meeting of Marion County commissioners. Where to deposit it, in what type of accounts, or whether to leave it as it is were questions debated in a lengthy discussion with bankers Matthew Classen, Marion National Bank; Ed Colburn, Farmers and Drovers National Bank; Wilbur Avery, Peabody State Bank; and Elmer Flaming, First National Bank, Hillsboro.

Featured person in this week’s “Personality Profile” segment is Charles “Junior” Bredemeier, city superintendent.

Melissa Krispense, Marion Elementary fifth grader, won first place in a school spelling bee Friday. Runner-up was Jeff Conyers, sixth grader. Both will prepare for a county spelling bee in the spring.

A popular winter sport for those with some endurance is ice fishing. More than 50 people braved a cold but sunny day Sunday to try their luck at Marion Reservoir. A favorite spot is north of Durham Cove, on the northwest side of a bridge.

Kay Blackman was crowned queen of courts Friday night between games in Marion Gymnasium. Her attendants were Paula Vinduska and Barbara Costello.

Tim Jordan, Danny Annis, and Jeff Herzet won first, second, and third Jan. 16 at the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby in the American Legion Hall.
