4 HHS wrestlers take 2nd at Pratt

The Hillsboro High School wrestling team recorded five second-place finishes Saturday at the Central Kansas League Tournament at Pratt.

Justin King lost in the championship match of the 145-pound weight class in overtime to Jake Johnson of Smoky Valley.

“Justin dominated in his three wins, not surrendering a single point,” coach Scott O’Hare said.

Aaron Bina also fell to a Smoky Valley opponent, Tyler Whittaker, in the championship match of the 160-pound weight class.

“Aaron dominated his first two opponents, winning both matches by fall,” O’Hare said. “He then won an exciting 8-7 match with 7 points scored in the final 10 seconds.”

Bret Mueller pinned his first two opponents in the 130-pound class before losing to Riley Soward, who is ranked No. 2 in the state.

Dylan Delk also had the misfortune of meeting the No. 2 wrestler in the state in the 171-pound class, Taylor Baird of Pratt, who is ranked in 4A. Delk finished second with a 2-1 record for the tournament.

Cody Delk finished third in the 135-pound class.

“(135) was one of the toughest and deepest weight classes in the tournament,” O’Hare said.

Tanner Jones also placed third in the 152-pound class. Jones lost to eventual champion Lars Peterson of Smoky Valley and then lost his final match by 1 point.

Darren Mueller finished fourth in the 125-pound class.

“On Saturday, I thought the boys responded fairly well,” O’Hare said. “We started to execute some things that will be necessary against better opponents.”

Marion

The Trojans lost three dual matches Thursday in Marion: 40-20 to Smoky Valley, 36-21 to Hoisington, and 28-23 to Marion.

“I was disappointed in some performances Thursday night,” O’Hare said. “I felt like we made too many technical mistakes at this time in the season.”

Four Trojans ended the meet with positive days. Delk went undefeated in the 171-pound class with wins over Weston Loder, 7-4, of Smoky Valley; Chris Crawford, pin, of Hoisington; and Andrew Kjellin, 17-3, of Marion.

Matt Wiebe pinned 189-pound opponents Blake Mitchell of Smoky Valley and Zach Lewman of Marion, but was pinned by Cody Batt of Hoisington.

Darren Mueller pinned 125-pound opponents Colter Krehbiel of Smoky Valley and Bryce Boxberger of Hoisington, but lost 10-0 to Randy Regnier of Marion.

Bina defeated Hagen Hanzlick of Hoisington, 5-1, and Galen Funk of Marion, 10-8, but lost to Whittaker of Smoky Valley, 8-1.
