Arthur Rohn, chairman of the department of anthropology, Wichita State University, and Waldo Wedel of the Smithsonian Institution are heading up a crew in search of evidence of earlier peoples in the land that will be covered by Marion flood control dike.
Those working north of Marion figure that the whole area in the bend of the Cottonwood River, near the beginning of the dike, was a living area for American Indians from the 1500s to the 1700s.
It is reasonable to believe that there was a village and at least a number of people close by. However, excavation is being done only in an area that will be covered by the levee.
Strategic Air Command has been training two miles west of Burns for about two months, tracing bombing planes and measuring the degree of accuracy on simulated targets.
Brad Heerey of Marion, a junior, was selected for the Cottonwood Valley League all-star basketball first team this week. Randy Robertson, Marion senior, received honorable mention.
Members of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 66 visited the American Freedom Train on March 21 in Wichita. Scouts attending were Cindy Bernhardt, Ann and Jan Bryant, Gerry Ehrlich, Greta and Gena Helmer, Lori Hett, and Lisa Wilson. Kim Warnica, another Cadette, joined the group later with her family.
