Extra heavy holiday travel coupled with constantly changing weather caused injury to motorists and damage to cars over the New Year’s weekend.

A young Peabody couple, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry D. Whisler, were the victims Sunday of an early-morning tragedy one-half mile west of Peabody on US-50, the first in Marion County in 1967.

Mrs. Ira Popp of Tampa was the victim of an automobile accident that happened Monday two miles north and three east of Herington on K-4. Driver of the other car, Marion A. Henning of White City, was killed instantly. Mr. Popp was treated at the Herington hospital and released.

The Marion County RECORD held the drawing of lucky winners in their Christmas subscription special offer Dec. 31, with the following results:

Frank Holub won the first prize, his choice of an Underwood portable typewriter or an Olivetti adding machine.

Second prize, a genuine Tensor study lamp was won by Martin Jantz.

Four third prizes of new Rand McNally atlases were won by Mrs. Don Berg, Otto Bentz, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ronsick, and Mildred Knoblock.

The medical staff of St. Luke Hospital held its annual election recently. Holding office for 1967 are: Dr. C.R. Magee, chief of staff; Dr. James A. Wheeler, vice president; and Dr. R.R. Melton, secretary-treasurer.

A goal has been set this year of 500 family memberships in the Marion Athletic Association. The drive will start next week.

Family memberships sell for $5 and individual memberships at $3 for the year. These entitle the holders to free admittance to all ball games and other activities during the year with the exception of tournaments.
