This year’s primary election in Marion County was one of the quietest on record, with a light vote and no big surprises. The only issue that brought out voters was in Marion, where a vote on a $90,000 bond issue to finance construction of a new sports stadium was approved by a margin of 94 votes.

Only two people were winners in Wednesday’s Cash Day drawing this week. Harriet J. Bina, Marion, received $200; Paul B. Gentry, Florence, missed $5; Howard Groening, Marion, missed $25; Darla Hicks, Cedar Point, missed $10; and Mrs. Leroy Roberts, Marion, received $45.

The Church of Christ congregation, the most recent addition to Marion’s church families, has secured a large tent from the denomination’s McPherson congregation and will conduct a week of tent meetings Aug. 8 to 14 in Marion.

Although the church’s building is fully air-conditioned, pastor Louis Thompson said members thought the public would enjoy the appeal of a real outdoor tent meeting.

Fred Lewis, one of the area’s better fishermen, caught a 41-pound catfish Thursday night on a trotline set near Strong City. The fish was one of seven caught that night, using small carp for bait.

The Scoundrels, a popular Marion rock ’n’ roll combo, will play for a Jaycee-sponsored dance from 8 to 11 p.m. Aug. 11 at Marion County Lake hall.
