The Marion community was saddened this week at news of the passing of Emory Hawbecker, one of its most widely known and well liked businessmen. He was 52 years of age. This jovial and admired man gained a wide circle of friends over the more that 28½ years he operated the “Cubby Hole,” popular Marion eating place on 2nd Street.

Over 10 years ago Lou Chapman of Aulne noticed the water tasted like gasoline. He tried some of it in his gasoline engine. It worked so well that he has continued to use it and has burned many gallons of the stuff.

Class officers have been named at Marion High School. Listed with first named being president, then vice president followed by secretary treasurer are:

Seniors—Bob Kline, Isla May Hiebert, and Marjory Collett. Juniors, Dennis Richards, Billy McKibben, and Mary Ann Skibbe. Sophomores, Duane Fruechting, Dwight Fruechting, and Anita Collett. Freshmen, Glenda Razor, Jimmy Smith, and Pat Kruse.

Two more infantile paralysis cases have been reported to the county health office. John Bernhardt, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bernhardt, Lost Springs, was stricken Sept. 22, and Clifford Shields, 22, Burns, was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Wichita on Oct. 6.

The health office also reports four cases of whooping cough and two of mumps.

D.D. McIntosh, former postmaster and one of the community’s most respected men, passed away Tuesday. He was 77 years of age.
