Nine people have applied to be Marion’s city administrator, Mayor David Mayfield said Tuesday.
“We’ve gotten quite a few in the last couple weeks,” he said of applications. “I’m pretty impressed with some of them we’ve got.”
Tuesday was the first time council members publicly discussed hiring a new administrator. A majority of council members voted in December to fire former administrator Mark Skiles.
Mayfield proposed meeting in executive session at 4:30 p.m. March 1 to review applications and narrow the list of candidates to four.
Mayfield earlier had said that hiring a city clerk was his first priority. Former clerk Tiffany Jeffrey resigned in December after an executive session in which the council discussed firing Skiles but did not do so. Her husband, police chief Clinton Jeffrey, and assistant police chief Steve Janzen also resigned.
Council members swore in the city’s new clerk, Janet Robinson, at a meeting Tuesday that lasted 11 minutes.
They had voted Feb. 6 to hire her. Robinson was Florence’s city clerk for about 18 years until 2019, when she was asked to resign.
She began work Tuesday in Marion.
