‘Mill sale’ didn’t raise or lower taxes

Yellow signs around Marion bearing the words “mill sale” led a wanderer over the weekend to Bearly Makin’ It Antiques, much like following a yellow brick road.
For co-owner Marion “Oggie” Ogden, the reasoning behind the words on the signs was simple.
“We have a ‘mill sale’ because it sounds better than saying a ‘garage sale,’” he said.
The antique store, which has been featured on History Channel’s “American Pickers,” was open Friday and Saturday.
Everything sold was from a refurbished alfalfa mill on Timber Rd. that was in use from 1942 to 1978.
It was open a day earlier than usual for “crafters and people who put things together,” Ogden said, who were making last-minute attempts to create items for Marion’s Art in the Park and Hillsboro’s Arts and Crafts Fair.
A line of cars stretching a quarter-mile is typical for Bearly Makin’ It Antiques’ “mill sale.”
Ogden has had people visit from as far as Alaska and Central America.
“There’s beer in the refrigerator,” he told a couple who had traveled from Oklahoma. “Stay as long as you want.”
