These accident reports were released this past week by law enforcement agencies:
SHERIFF
190th Rd. west of Quail Creek Rd.
Harvey S. Johnson, 53, Hillsboro, swerved to avoid a deer at 7:25 a.m. May 16 and drove his 2000 Buick Regal into a ditch, striking a telephone terminal, a tree, and a raised portion of a ditch.
His car sustained disabling damage to its front third and undercarriage and was towed, according to one of nine accident reports released Friday by the sheriff’s department.
US-50 between Quail Creek and Remington Rds.
Kyle G. Brown, 17, Moss Point, Mississippi, hit a deer at 6:11 a.m. May 17 with a 2004 Ford Ranger owned by Garrett Brown of the same address.
The pickup sustained disabling damage to its front and hood and was towed.
9th St. east of Elm St., Peabody
Swerving to avoid a dog in the road at 7:30 a.m. May 17, Aiden M. Hurst, 16, Peabody, drove a 2014 Toyota Tacoma off the road and into a culvert sign.
The pickup, owned by Michael J. Hurst of the same address, remained drivable with damage to its front and hood.
The wreck was investigated by a sheriff’s deputy because Peabody is operating without police.
US-50 east of Remington Rd.
Attorney Randall J. Pankratz, 70, Newton, who serves as municipal judge for multiple area towns, hit a deer at 7:20 p.m. May 17 with his 2020 Lexus RX350.
Deputy Austin Spencer’s report listed Pankratz’s car as a total loss with damage to its right front, hood, and undercarriage.
290th Rd. west of Limestone Rd.
Adam J. Makovec, 27, rural Lincolnville, reported at 11:20 a.m. May 18 that he had fallen asleep while driving eight hours earlier and wrecked his 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 3500.
According to deputy Landis Goodman’s report, the pickup went off the road to the right, traveled nearly 400 feet in a ditch, struck a utility pole, and continued nearly 170 feet through a field before Makovec continued on to his home.
The pickup remained drivable with damage to its front third, hood, and undercarriage.
No explanation for the delay in reporting the wreck was offered in Goodman’s report. No tickets were listed as being issued.
K-256 east of Timber Rd.
Frankie L. Welch, 65, Florence, hit a deer at 6 a.m. May 20 with his 2015 Jeep Cherokee, which remained drivable with damage to its front third and undercarriage.
US-56/77 south of 280th Rd.
Mayco Valles-Silva, 34, Wichita, was ticketed for driving without a license after he hit a deer at 7:16 p.m. May 21 with his 2015 GMC Sierra.
Deputy Austin Spencer’s report said the pickup was a total loss with damage to its front third and undercarriage.
Neither Valles-Silva nor his passenger, 45-year-old Alfredo Alvarado-Vallos, reported injury.
Gilham Rd. west of Upland Rd.
Backing up to try to turn right at 10:18 p.m. May 21 from Gilham Rd. onto Upland Rd. at Marion County Lake, James G. McDaniel, 79, Abilene, drove his 2011 motor home off the road, into a ditch, and against a fence owned by Mike B. Meisinger of Hillsboro.
The motor home was towed even though deputy Joshua Meliza characterized damage to its rear as minor.
Meliza’s report blamed the wreck on inattentive driving, but no tickets were listed as being issued.
US-50 east of Turkey Creek Rd.
An unidentified item fell off a passing semi-trailer at 2:41 p.m. Thursday and struck the windshield of a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt owned and driven by Leisa M. Frisbie, 50, Grantville, causing her to swerve off the road and hit a merge sign.
She reported feeling lightheaded after the accident but declined to be taken to a hospital.
Her car remained drivable with damage characterized as minor to its right side and windshield.
HILLSBORO
Sonic Drive-In parking lot
Connor R. Pokorski, 21, Newton, backed a 2014 Nissan Frontier out of a parking space and into the rear of a 2003 Ford F-150 legally parked in an adjacent stall at 11:13 a.m. May 19, according to a report released Tuesday.
Pokorski’s pickup, owned by Kate Pokorski of Wichita, had no visible damage to its left rear bumper, according to assistant chief Randall Brazil.
The other pickup, driven by Ralph Klein, 80, Hillsboro, sustained damage to its right rear. Klein’s neighbor, Kelly Hawkins, was listed as a passenger in the pickup.
No tickets were listed as being issued.
MARION
French Creek Cove access road
Part-time sheriff’s deputy and retired Hillsboro police chief Daniel L. Kinning, 66, Hillsboro, hit a deer at 8:05 p.m. May 21 with his lake patrol squad car, a 2020 Dodge Durango.
The sport-utility vehicle remained drivable with damage to its driver’s side doors.
Patricia A. Kinning, 65, of the same address was a passenger at the time.
To provide independent review, Marion police investigated the wreck. Interim Chief Zach Hudlin said Kinning had been driving the speed limit.
K-150 near Bluestem Rd.
Sheriff’s Sergeant Joshua Meliza, 36, Hillsboro, hit a deer at 2:40 a.m. Friday with his patrol vehicle, also a 2020 Dodge Durango.
The SUV sustained damage characterized as minor to its passenger doors.
To provide independent review, Marion police investigated the wreck. Officer Dustin Woodford said Meliza had been driving the speed limit and attempted to avoid hitting the deer.
