These accident reports were released this past week by law enforcement agencies:

SHERIFF

US-50 east of Old Mill Rd.

Hitting a raccoon in the roadway at 5:20 a.m. Sept. 12 proved costly for Brandon Reyes, 29, Pomona, California.

The engine of a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta he was driving was damaged along with the vehicle’s undercarriage and front end.

The vehicle, owned by Gerard R. McBridge of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, was towed, and Reyes was ticketed for driving an unregistered vehicle and for not having liability insurance.

US-56/77 south of 340th Rd.

Ryan P. Mullins, 31, Wamego, hit a deer at 6:45 a.m. Sept. 12 while driving a 2019 Honda Fit owned by Dorran P. Mullins of the same address, oddly enough on a road named Deercreek.

The vehicle sustained extensive damage to its front, left, hood, undercarriage, windshield, and windows and was listed on deputy Bruce Burke’s report as being destroyed.

K-15 north of 170th Rd.

Hailey K. Bird, 25, Canton, hit a deer at 8:12 p.m. Sept. 13 with her 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, which sustained disabling damage to its front and hood and was towed.

150th Rd. east of K-15

Gaylord L. Goertzen, 75, Hillsboro, hit a deer at 7:30 p.m. Thursday with his 2020 Buick Enclave, which remained drivable despite damage to its left front.

Peggy Goertzen of the same address was a passenger at the time.

Hillsboro police investigated the accident for the sheriff’s office.

HILLSBORO

Ash St. north of 3rd St.

A constant-velocity axel on a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox owned and driven by Jonathan T. Douglas, 34, Hillsboro, broke at 5:01 p.m. Sept. 20, causing the vehicle’s right front tire to fall off.

No one was injured. The Chevy was towed.

Casey’s General Store parking lot

Carrie J. Stasch, 63, rural Marion, backed her 2007 Cadillac Escalade into a parked 2010 GMC Terrain at 7:03 a.m. Friday.

Stasch had parked parallel in front of the store. Matthew R. Hein, 38, Hillsboro, had parked his GMC diagonally. A tractor-trailer also was in the parking lot, making maneuvering more difficult than usual.

Stasch’s Cadillac sustained damage to its left rear. Hein’s GMC was damaged on its right front.

The accident was not reported until six hours later and initially was investigated as a hit-and-run. Surveillance video, including a camera that automatically recognizes license plates, was employed in the investigation.
