Thomas B.C. Smith, 18, Aiden, dozed off at 4:04 a.m. April 7, allowed his 2010 Hyundai Elantra to veer off the road to the left, overcorrected, and rolled the car into the right ditch.

Deputy Joshua Meliza’s report said Smith might have been injured when he hit his head during the wreck, but he declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion firefighters.

His car was listed as totaled with damage to the entire vehicle. Marion firefighters were called to control spilling fuel.

Darrin L. Gray, 61, Abilene, reported nearly 1½ hours later that he hit a dog at 6 a.m. April 7 with his 2014 Mazda MZ2.

Deputy Bruce Burke’s report does not indicate what happened to the dog or who might have owned it.

However, in a routine activity report released Monday, Hillsboro police noted that they had been informed of a dead dog found sometime April 7 at that location and that they had forwarded the information to the sheriff’s department.

Gray’s hatchback remained drivable with damage to its front and undercarriage.
