SHERIFF
Indigo Rd. north of 170th Rd.
An 89-year-old ATV operator’s failure to signal a left turn is being blamed for a wreck in which he was seriously injured at 1:48 p.m. Aug. 9, according to one of two accident reports released Friday.
As reported in last week’s issue, Lloyd A. Funk of rural Hillsboro was turning his Arctic Cat ATV left into a field entrance when its right rear was struck by a 2013 Lincoln MKX that had been traveling behind it.
Both vehicles, which had been northbound, had crossed into the southbound lane before colliding, according to deputy Clayton Philpott’s report.
The ATV rolled onto its side, sustaining damage to its right rear and left front but remaining drivable. The Lincoln, owned and driven by Kathleen A. Decker, 84, Bel Aire, sustained disabling damage to its front third and hood and was towed.
Funk, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the side of the ATV. He was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, by a LifeSafe helicopter. Decker did not report any injuries.
US-50 west of Wagon Wheel Rd.
Alejandro M. Ruiz, 52, Lawrence, hit a deer at 8:51 p.m. Aug. 9 with his 2022 Chevrolet Colorado, which sustained disabling damage to its right front and hood and was towed.
HILLSBORO
Pine and C Sts.
Unlicensed 16-year-old driver Neavaeh R. Britton, Hillsboro, failed to negotiate a curve and drove a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox off the road, through a ditch, and into a field at 10:30 p.m. Aug. 11.
The sport utility vehicle, which had been traveling south on a road that turns to the east, ended up facing northeast in the field.
The SUV, owned by Karlene J. Vogt, sustained damage to its left front and undercarriage and was towed.
Both Britton and passenger Shaylinn M. Vogt, 21, of the same address as the vehicle owner, face multiple charges, detailed in the Offenses section of this page.
Assistant Chief Randy Brazil’s report blamed the accident on inattentive driving.
