Activity groups emerge from hibernation

Erratic weather hasn’t stopped health coaches Ginger Becker and Joni Enns from walking with a group once a month.

Starting in January, they decided to walk or jog a lap around Marion County Lake on the first Saturday of each month. Others joined the pair.

“We just wanted to be healthy,” Becker said. “We sent it to our clients and then opened it up to the public. We’ve had more people in the public come than our clients because everyone’s busy.”

They have walked through temperatures colder than 20 degrees in January and 40 degrees in February.

“We’d usually do it at 1 o’clock in the afternoon since it was so cold,” Becker said. “But it’s been getting warmer, so we might start early in the morning.”

Other athletic groups are starting activities as spring comes. Hillsboro recreation department plans to have tennis matches on Wednesday nights in summer and is putting together a disc golf class for adults. It also has a summer activity brochure available online.

With COVID cases declining, Tabor College is comfortable offering its bi annual women’s self-defense class April 21. It canceled the class in 2020.

Nutritionist Clara Sprowls is starting a step challenge. For a $25 entry fee, whoever takes the most steps between April 1 and April 30 will receive $100. Weekly prizes also will be given out.

Hillsboro Recreation Department has also made its summer activity brochure available online and to Hillsboro schools.
