Alert clerk gets help for ailing cyclist

An elderly Canton man who may suffer from dementia and left his house on a motorcycle was found Monday in Hillsboro after someone at Casey’s General Store notified police that a man there wasn’t behaving as expected.

“The family had contacted law enforcement because he had left the residence,” Hillsboro police officer John Huebert said.

The family expressed concern because of his medical issues.

Someone from Casey’s called police to say a man they thought might be intoxicated was in the store’s parking lot, Hillsboro Police Chief Jessey Hiebert said.

Hiebert helped remove the motorcycle and saw no signs of alcohol.

Family members showed up, and the Canton police chief came to help the family, Huebert said

An ambulance took the man to Hillsboro Community Hospital. He later was taken to a Veterans Administration hospital, Hiebert said.

“Whoever called it in recognized that there was an issue that needed to be addressed,” Huebert said.

Because they did, the man got the help he needed, Huebert said.
