Artists honored at league festival

Four Hillsboro High School artists received awards at the Central Kansas League Art Festival last week at McPherson College’s Friendship Hall.

Kalie Siebert’s colored pencil “Lion” received a gold award, and Karina Torres’ ink “Acid Trip” received a silver award. Siebert’s assorted paper “Flower,” Meghan Leihy’s photo “Intensity,” and Matthew Reeh’s photo “Sunset Silhouette” were named to the honorable mention.

The festival featured 300 works by 100 high school artists. Rachel Epp Buller, assistant art professor at Bethel College, was the juror of the festival.

“It’s so exciting to see the quality of work that’s coming out of Central Kansas, even with limited budgets sometimes,” Buller said. “These teachers do great things on a shoestring budget.”

During judging, students went to workshops on metal jewelry, drawing, and wheel-thrown ceramics.
