Three seniors played their last home game at the Bluebird gym against a tough Berean squad. The Warriors jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter. Free throws by Alex Hiebert and Aleena Cook and a field goal from Jessica Harvey helped the Bluebirds stay within five points at the end of the quarter, 12-7. Goessel became helpless offensively in the second quarter as Berean scored 15 unanswered points to lead at halftime 27-7.
Trailing by 20, the Bluebirds came back on the court in the third period and Harvey scored five points and Alex Hiebert hit a layup for seven Bluebird points. Berean did find their rhythm in the last part of the quarter stretching their lead to 23 points. Page Hiebert scored for the Bluebirds as the third period came to an end and Goessel trailed, 39-18.
Erin Brubaker, Johanna Hoffman and Harvey put together eight consecutive points, to get within 13 points. With Page Hiebert moving well, teammates were able to get her the ball for four points. Alex Hiebert and Aleena Cook hit free throws to get the Bluebirds within 10 points, but the Warriors were able to manage the clock and finished the game with a 46-33 win.
Goessel’s seniors have been leaders for this year’s season. Harvey ended with 14 points and two steals, Alex Hiebert finished with five points and five rebounds and Hoffman scored two points with six rebounds. Other scores came from Page Hiebert’s six points, Brubaker three and Cook three.
Goessel plays Burrton in the sub-state tournament at 6:00 pm. today in Goessel. The winner will play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Burrton. The Bluebirds ended the season with a 9-11 record.
