Goessel’s track team jumped to Class 2A this year and had a frustrating regional meet Thursday, with four finishes one short of qualifying for state.
The lone highlight was Stephany Meyer placing second in long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 1½ inches, securing the Bluebirds’ only spot in this weekend’s state meet in Wichita.
“Although four athletes finished fifth, several of them had their best performance of the season,” coach Curtis Guhr said.
Brittney Hiebert ran a season best 800-meters with a time of 2 minutes, 33.98 seconds; Julia Nightengale ran her best time of the year in the 3200 at 13:55.43; and Kara Burkholder tossed the javelin 102’3”. All three seniors placed fifth in their events.
Meyer also finished fifth in the 200, and added a sixth in triple jump.
Meyer, a junior, participated in four events last at last year’s state meet in Class 1A. She will compete in this year’s Class 2A long jump beginning at 4:45 pm. Friday.
