Bluebirds open league season with wins

Volleyball team defeats Centre, Elyria

Goessel played the first matches Sept. 7 in the Wheat State League with good results, defeating Centre in three games.

The Bluebirds finished strong and won both games against host school Elyria Christian, 25-16 and 25-20.

Saturday

The Goessel Invitational Tournament on Saturday proved to be tough competition as the Bluebirds went 2-2.

GHS started the morning with a marathon match with Remington that lasted 1 hour, 14 minutes. It was a battle to the end with the Broncos winning game one, 25-23.

The Bluebirds jumped to a 13-3 lead in game two with Makaila Schmidt getting four aces and Van Horn dominating net play. The Bluebirds were able to force a third game.

The Bluebirds lost, 19-25.

Against an athletic Sedgwick team, the Bluebirds fell behind 10-8 and still trailed 15-13 when Sedgwick scored three consecutive points and then five consecutive points to take a commanding lead, finishing game one, 25-17. The Cardinals won game two, 25-16.

Goessel finished pool play with Burrton, winning both games, 25-15 and 25-18.

In bracket play, the Bluebirds were matched with Canton-Galva. Behind the strong net play of Van Horn, Goessel coasted to a 25-11 win.

In game two both teams battled for points. Goessel went on to win, 25-19, and earned fifth place in the tournament.

Goessel is now 2-0 in league games and 7-2 overall.

The Bluebirds will travel to Tescott on Saturday for a varsity tournament.
