Staff writer

The Goessel Bluebirds spiked their way to a 3-0 season opener Aug. 30 in Herington.

Goessel breezed through Ell-Saline 25-7 and 25-10, and knocked off Herington, controlling them 25-10 and 25-11.

In their second game they survived a rough first set against Haven 26-24.

Goessel jumped out to an early lead with Leah Booton serving.

The Bluebirds called an unusual time-out after seeing a 10-1 lead erode to a 14-11 lead.

Haven scored five unanswered points to get ahead 16-14.

The Bluebirds tied the game at 18, but Haven snatched a 24-22 lead.

After a Wildcat serving error, the defense at the net proved valuable.

Eden Hiebert blocked a Wildcat hit. Brittney Hiebert and E Hiebert combined for another block and then E Hiebert took a Wuest assist for the win.

In the second set, the Wildcats would not stay close as the Bluebirds jumped out to a 15-3 lead and won 25-9.

The Blue Birds defeated Peabody-Burns Tuesday.

Goessel plays host to their invitational tournament Saturday at the Goessel gyms.
