Bluestem Art Guild to exhibit at Gallery 101

Staff writer

Members of Bluestem Art Guild will exhibit numerous art pieces through September at Gallery 101 in Marion.

A pre-opening from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday will give the public a chance to meet the artists. Proprietor Jan Davis will offer wine and refreshments.

Charcoal, oil, acrylic, and chalk pastel media will be on display. Most pieces will be for sale.

The club includes members from Chase, Lyon, Morris, and Marion counties and one from Prairie Village in Johnson County.

Five farm wives in Chase County started the club in 1986 as Chase County Art Guild. It grew to include members from outside the county. The group changed its name to Bluestem in 2014 to reflect the inclusive nature of the guild.

It has 18 members, and more are welcome to join. Denise Fetrow of Strong City is president, and Madonna Schafers of Marion is secretary.

The group meets at 2 p.m. the third Friday of every month at Hilltop Manor, 1501 Lawrence, Marion.

Artists choose a subject as a challenge for the next meeting. Themes include seascapes, self-portraits, animals, waterfalls, barns, birds, and more. Meetings sometimes include art lessons.

The club plans exhibits throughout the year and goes on trips to art galleries. One time, the group went to Council Grove Lake and painted outside. Members have visited the Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan, the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, and a Dale Chihuly exhibit of large-scale glass sculptures.
