Centre, Goessel finish in top 5 at Hillsboro, Herington

The Centre and Goessel high school golf teams finished second and third respectively Friday at the Hillsboro Invitational Tournament.
Cougar golfer Adam Matz won the tournament with a score of 76, shooting a 35 on the front nine holes. Tyler Klenda was the next highest Centre golfer with a score of 85, 41 on the front nine. Dylan Svitak finished 19th with a score of 93, 46 on the back nine.
Brubaker led the team with a fourth-place individual medal, scoring an 85. Shane Goerzen finished 15th with a 90, scoring 45 in both rounds. Jake Smucker came in 17th with a 92, followed by teammate Trey Schmidt, 18th, with a 93. Braden Unruh scored a 97 and Drake Sterk, 27th, playing in his first varsity meet, hit a 98.
Twenty points less than April 5 was exactly what the Bluebirds scored with a team total of 360.
“It was a good day,” Unruh said. “Everyone on the team shot under 100.”
Devin Dick finished seventh for Hillsboro with a score of 86, 42 on the front nine. Daniel Kenney finished 25th with a score of 96, 45 on the back nine.

Herington
Every Marion County high school golf team played under windy conditions April 5 in the Herington Invitational Tournament.
Playing on their home course, the Centre High School golf team finished third. Klenda finished third with a round of 85, including a front nine score of 44. Matz also finished in the top 10. A score of 87, 43 on the front nine, was enough to put Matz in seventh place. Svitak was also under 100 for the Cougars. He finished 28th with a score of 98, with a back-nine score of 42.
Goessel High School golfer Goerzen launched a hole-in-one on a 156-yard par 3. The thrilling shot propelled him into an individual fourth place, leading the Goessel team with an 86. Brubaker and Schmidt each came in at 97 followed by Davis Cook at 100. Smucker and Unruh rounded out the scoring with 102 and 103, respectively.
“We came out better than we thought we might, with the wind,” coach Justin Coup said.
The team shot 380 for fifth out of 13 teams, but the coach would like to see the team scoring about 20 strokes less.
The Marion High School team finished eighth.
Landon Leiker finished 10th with a round of 91, and a front nine of 44. Braydon Putter finished 22nd with a round of 96, and a back nine of 45.
The Peabody-Burns High School team finished 10th.
Jason Wingert was the Warriors’ best finisher at 19th place with a round of 95, 43 on the front nine.
The Hillsboro High School team finished 13th.
Dick was the Trojans’ highest finisher at 20 with a score of 96, 47 on the back nine.
Jason Eggleston of Sedgwick was the overall winner of the tournament with a round of 84, 41 on the back nine.
