Centre loses two to Wakefield

Staff writer

Playing on the road Friday, Centre girls’ basketball team lost a disappointing contest to Wakefield, 46-43.

The game was close throughout. Centre trailed by 1 to 4 points throughout the entire contest and tied the game 38-38 briefly in the fourth quarter.

With 13 seconds remaining, the Lady Cougars trailed 44-43 and had possession of the ball. They lost the ball on a bad pass and were forced to foul, resulting in 2 Wakefield free throws and a 3-point loss.

The girls are still looking for that first victory. They will play Solomon Jan. 5 at home.

Boys pummelled

Playing another state-ranked team Friday, the Centre Cougars were defeated at Wakefield, 62-36.

Helped by cold shooting by the Bombers, the Cougars held their own in the first quarter of the contest. Aggressive defense held the Bombers to 7 points while Centre scored 4. Nathaniel Engler and Cole Methvin each made a free throw, and Methvin added a field goal.

The Bombers began to pull away in the second quarter. Missing their leading point guard and leading scorer, the Cougars trailed by 10 points, 21-11, at halftime.

The team struggled to score for the remainder of the game and finished with a 34-point loss. Methvin led Centre’s scoring with 10 points, followed by Engler with 9.

The team has a record of 5-1 heading into the holiday break. They will face Solomon at home Jan. 5.
