When Centre High School was built in 1959, a residence was constructed on the premises as a superintendent’s house.

The house served that purpose for many years, but in 2010, it was made into the district office. Now, it may become a day care center.

At its meeting Feb. 15, the school board considered several building proposals, including establishing a day care and adding two classrooms to the west wing of the school.

Geist said the day care would serve teachers, staff members, and parents and could attract more people to the school district.

Classroom additions would be for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. A new concession stand for the football field would be attached to the north side.

A proposal to add to the district’s bus barn was rejected. A proposal to add a new district office and weight room to the south side of the gymnasium also was discussed, as well as renovation of the current weight room.

Geist reported a balance of $1.6 million in the district’s capital outlay fund. It could finance improvements, or the district could propose a bond issue or obtain a loan.

More information will be presented at the board’s March 14 meeting, at which members will vote on the proposals.

Geist reported that a company that installed new volleyball equipment would make necessary adjustments at no additional cost.

Open gym will be available 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays for the remainder of the school year. An adult sponsor must be on duty. Thieen Antoszyk volunteered to open the facility every Sunday. Both gyms may be used.

The board approved purchase of high school track uniforms at a cost not to exceed $1,740.

Principal Trevor Seibert’s contract was extended through 2023-2024.

Jessie Helmer was hired as swim team coach for $2,815. Kim Smith will transport swim team athletes to and from Marion for $20 a day.
