Charles Cowan

1925-2014

Charlie Edward Cowan, 88, of Stockton, Mo., passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Lake Stockton Healthcare Facility.

Charlie was the only child born to John E. and Mildred George Cowan on Oct. 13, 1925, in Newton, Kan. He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served as a torpedo man’s mate 3rd class for three years during World War II.

Upon his honorable discharge, he hurried home to marry the love of his life, Blanche Brown in Burns, Kan. They were married for 68 years until his passing.

They resided in Newton before moving to Marion, Kan., where Charlie built the house he and Blanche lived in on Marion County Lake for 42 years. In 2006 they moved to Stockton, where they quickly made new friends at the Korth Senior Center.

Charlie was a union brick mason for nearly 30 years. Upon retirement, he loved to travel in his RV to enjoy bluegrass and the fellowship of other campers. Charlie never met a stranger and cherished his family and friendships. He was a faithful Baptist and was known for his powerful prayers.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife, Blanche; daughters, Marsha Cowan of Stockton and Shelley McLain of Edgerton, Kan.; three grandchildren, Spencer McLain, Cameron McLain (fiancée Kaitlyn Farnham), and Trey Patterson; a great-grandson, Beau McLain; brother-in-law Bill G. Brown, of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.

The visitation was held at Brumback Funeral Home, Stockton, at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, with the funeral service following at 3 p.m. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 28.
