Chef to own restaurant at Elgin

Staff writer

Chef Kari Newell is taking over ownership of Parlour 1886 at the Historic Elgin Hotel on Feb. 1.

“Tammy approached me in October with the idea to offer me an opportunity to own my own restaurant,” Newell said of Elgin co-owner Tammy Ensey.

The restaurant will become Chef’s Plate at Parlour 1886.

“We’re keeping the same schedule with forward motion to offer one to two more dinner services a week,” Newell said. “That’s going to take some staffing.”

Menus for Friday and Saturday dinners won’t change, but Newell plans to expand Thursday’s menu.

The restaurant’s entrance will move to the north side of the building. Newell is designing a new website for Chef’s Plate, but a link for reservations also will be on the Elgin’s website. Starting Feb. 1, the new phone number to make reservations will be (620) 323-0572.

Chef’s Plate also will offer private luncheons as well as dinners on days the restaurant is closed.

The restaurant still will have a bar. Newell said she planned to focus on “elevating” the guest experience.

“People can expect to see a more professional front when they walk in,” she said.

She planned to bring in a “better selection” of bourbons and new craft cocktails.

The Elgin will continue to own the restaurant’s portion of the building as well as the restaurant’s furniture.

“I’m basically operating a business within the business,” she said.
