Chess tournament will be Saturday

Hillsboro Chess Guild will host a kindergarten through high school chess tournament Saturday in the Hillsboro Middle School gymnasium.

The tournament is the last Kansas Scholastic Chess Association tournament before State Chess Championships March 13 in Kansas City, guild coordinator Janet Whisenhunt said.

The guild’s fifth-grade and younger team placed third in its division Feb. 20 at Pleasant Valley. Team members were Jacob Denholm, Julian Hessel, Jonathan Hinerman, Jenna Hinerman, Dakota Klein, Ben Koop, Alex Lubbers, Brodie Rathbone, and Braden Vogt.

Hillsboro Chess Guild has 17 members that have qualified for State Chess Championships. In the all-ages division are Michael Christian, Daniel Gray, Marshall Hoffner, Justin King, and Matt Richert.

In the eighth-grade and younger division are Reece Berens, Matthew Denholm, and Jordan Fryhover. In the fifth-grade and younger division are Jacob Denholm, Julian Hessel, Jonathan Hinerman, Dakota Klein, Ben Koops, Alex Lubbers, Brodie Rathbone, and Braden Vogt.
