Giving family fun a gentle push

Chingawassa Days has several events that have become annual fixtures: concerts, barbecue, pancake feed, and chainsaw carving are just a few.

“I don’t think it’s any secret that there are things we seem to have every year,” committee member Mike Powers said.

A few years ago, the committee thought one staple event — the bed race — was running out of steam. The committee was prepared to let the races cease, but a couple of volunteers took up the responsibility to keep it going.

Torey Hett and Jarvis Whiteman participated in the bed races from the beginning, and they weren’t ready to let them disappear.

“It’s a good time,” Hett said. “You don’t hear about bed races all over the place.”

A team includes four pushers and one rider. Team members must be at least 10 years old. Anyone under 18 must have a parent’s permission. The entry fee for the bed races is $25 for a team.

This year’s field for the bed races is as deep as ever. There were 12 teams signed up on Friday, and there are always some latecomers, Hett said.

“It will keep ‘rolling,’ excuse me, for a little while,” Powers said.

The bed races will be at 9 a.m. Saturday on Main Street.
