CENTRE:   Coach predicts 2nd-place finish

Many returning starters on team

Staff writer

The Centre High School volleyball team has a good chance of finishing high in the Wheat State League. Coach Yvonne Burhoop’s prediction of a second-place finish is based on the experience of five returning letter winners, including three returning starters.

The 2012 team had a record of 19-16 and finished second in the league and second in the league tournament.

Seniors Bryanna Svoboda and Cacey Simons, both hitters, have three years of experience as letter winners and starters. Svoboda was named to the all-tournament team at the home tournament in 2010. Simons was named to all-league in 2011 and 2012. Junior Shelby Makovec, a setter, started and lettered the past two seasons.

Junior Brenna Shields lettered the past two years and earned all-league honorable mention. Senior Makenzie Deines lettered in 2012. Both will be vying for starting positions along with the other 12 students who have joined the squad.

Burhoop is in her 32nd year at Centre. Her overall coaching record is 504-350. Her daughter, Kylie Burhoop, assists her.

The coach picked Goessel to win the league, with Peabody finishing third.

The team begins play Sept. 3 at Canton Galva with Inman.
