Communities offer summer activities for kids

No matter where in the county you may find yourself, fun activities to make summer special are easy to find.

Hillsboro

At Hillsboro, recreation commission participants from outlying communities are accepted when the participant’s own community does not conduct similar activities and programs.

Hillsboro students can enroll in Camp for students entering 3rd through 6th grades. The camp, July 10 to 14 at City Hall, enhance children’s science, technology, engineering, and math skills. Students will use everyday materials to solve engineering challenges and puzzles. Activities could include such experiences as maze designing, protecting an egg from a drop, and building bridges. The camp will be open to 25 students. Deadline for enrollment is July 3, and cost is $35.

Tennis camp will be July 17 to 21 for students kindergarten through 3rd grade and July 10 to 14 for students 4th through 11th grade at Hillsboro Recreation Complex tennis courts. Students will spend most of their evening camp time practicing skills and doing tennis drills. They will need to bring a racket and water bottle. Enrollment deadline is July 7, and cost is $20.

Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center has open swim (Monday — Friday) from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. weekdays. Adult lap swimming is scheduled for 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday hours are 1 to 7 p.m. and Sunday hours are 2 to 7 p.m. Admission is $1 for ages 3 and younger, and $2 for ages 4 and above.

Marion

Red Cross swimming lessons will be available in two four-day sessions beginning July 17 and 24. Registrations are due by July 10 and cost is $35. Class size is limited. More information is available at kdhardey@gmail.com and (316) 833-9508.

Gymnastics for tots and beginners up to age 11 will be offered July 3, 10, and 17 at Marion Community Center. Students will learn splits, handstands, kick-offs, bridges, rolls, back handsprings, and more. Enrollment is being accepted at (620) 381-3535. Cost is $15, due by the first session.

Yoga for kids ages 3 and older will be 10 a.m. Wednesdays at Marion Community Center. Cost is $2 per session. More information is available at (620) 877-7744.

Marion Aquatic Center hours are 1 to 6 p.m. weekdays, 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Lap swimming is available 5:15 to 8 a.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. Aerobics are 8 to 9 a.m. Daily admission is $2.

Peabody

Peabody-Burns Recreation Commission offers pick-up volleyball at the high school gym from 8 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays through July 18 and pick-up basketball from 8 to 10 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through July 28. A batting cage is open from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays and Fridays through July 10.

Peabody Lakeside Country Club golf course will be open free on Monday and Thursday through July 31.

Free swimming days at the pool for anyone living in the Peabody-Burns school district will be July 4 and July 11. Free family swim nights are July 7 and 21. Peabody city pool hours are 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays. July 4 hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $1.50 for 16 and younger and $2 for 17 and older. Children 5 and younger are free with an adult.

Day trips and special events are planned for Wednesdays. Occasional Saturday trips also are available.

Trips in July include Museum of World Treasures, Rock River Rapids waterpark in Derby, Wichita Wingnuts baseball, Tanganyika Wildlife Park, Pretty Prairie Rodeo and Wichita Ice Center.
