Counterpoint plans anniversary event

Flint Hills Counterpoint will celebrate its fourth anniversary Sept. 9 with activities for all age groups.

The day will begin at 1 p.m. and include music, art, and land stewardship at Flint Hills Counterpoint’s home base, 1660 E. 90th Rd.

The day will culminate in an evening film, “Reclamation Meridian,” by Cyan Meeks, with music by Susan Mayo and the Switchgrass String Quartet at the Flint Hills Counterpoint pole barn stage.

Music during the day will be provided by Tallgrass Express string band; Lem Sheppard; Amado Espinoza performing South American music; Switchgrass String Quartet; String Daze; Bob Delk and Steve Hanneman; Corey Bell, and Zeke McGhee.

Kelly Yarbrough will demonstrate natural dyes and inks from Kansas plants and papermaking techniques using recycled papers. Amado Espinoza Junkyard Orchestra will make instruments and make music with them. Ed Lesyk will demonstrate chainsaw and milling techniques, and Michelle Butts will paint birdhouses.

Kids’ activities will include storytelling and roving puppets .

Conservation and art speakers will include talks on no-till cover crops, and updates on farm infrastructure for women and children; native plants and ecosystem lessons; installation artist Ed Lesyk; and Jose Faus on poetry in Kansas.
