County appraiser leaving

News editor

County Appraiser Cindy Magill has resigned, effective next Monday. She didn’t give county commissioners a reason for her resignation.

“I think she’s going to another county,” commission chairman Randy Dallke said Friday.

Magill declined to comment about her departure. She took the county appraiser job in 2005, coming from Butler County.

“I think there’s been some room for improvement, and Cindy has made some improvement,” Dallke said.

Dallke said he hopes the next appraiser will take variations in real estate markets between communities in the county into consideration. He said there were at least six distinct real estate markets in the county, and it was inaccurate to appraise a house in Peabody exactly the same as in Tampa.

“I don’t think you can have a good feel for the job until you’ve bought a home and sold a home,” he said.

The search for a new appraiser will be tough because of stringent requirements the state places on appraisers. The county has good employees who are willing to learn, but who simply don’t have the required certifications yet, Dallke said.

“I’d rather promote from within,” he said.
