County election filing deadline is June 1

News editor

The deadline for Marion County residents to file as candidates in county elections is noon June 1. All county government elected positions will be up for election, except for Roger Fleming’s County Commission position representing the First District.

Candidates have two options for filing — paying a fee based on the salary of the position or filing a signed petition and a smaller fee. The number of signatures required on a petition varies based on the position and which party’s nomination the candidate is seeking.

For countywide positions, 140 signatures are needed to get on the Republican primary ballot, or 39 to get on the Democratic primary ballot. The fee is $35 for either party.

Candidates for the County Commission Second District, represented by Dan Holub, need 48 (Republican) or 15 (Democratic). Candidates for the Third District, represented by Randy Dallke, need 39 (Republican) or 14 (Democratic) signatures.

Sheriff Rob Craft and County Attorney Susan Robson have both filed for reelection. No other candidates for county offices had filed by May 2.

Voter deadlines

The primary election for county positions will be Aug. 7. Voter registration is due July 17 to vote in the primary. Advance voting for the primary can begin July 18, provided the county clerk’s office has received the ballots by then.

Voter registration for the general election is due Oct. 16, and advance voting begins Oct. 17. The general election will be Nov. 6.
