County offers ways to stay active this winter

There’s no need to let colder weather keep people from staying active and enjoying indoors or outdoors activities.

Both Marion and Hillsboro offer an assortment of activities for children and adults.

Sports Aquatic Center, Marion

The Sports Aquatic Center is operated as a partnership between Marion’s public schools and the city, and available for public use unless it is being used for school events.

Hours are 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The pool has a ramp for handicapped accessibility, a water slide, diving board, and lanes for lap swimming.

The center also has a walking track. Twelve laps equal to approximately one mile.

Fees for the center are $2 for a day pass, $81.57 for a four-month single pass, $244.69 for a one-year single pass, $135.94 for a four-month family pass, and $407.82 for a one-year family pass.

Marion Parks and Recreation Department

A youth basketball league is enrolling for fourth- through sixth-grade in teams that will play six games in December and January. Registration deadline is Oct. 31.

Third- and fourth-grade basketball will play December and January at the elementary school gymnasium.

Tennis equipment can be checked out at the recreation office, 203 N. 3rd St.

Diamond H Fitness Center

Diamond H Fitness Center, 1222 E Main, offers a variety of fitness equipment and activities.

The center offers aerobics, yoga, sports and fitness instruction, and wellness classes.

Bluejay Lanes

Bluejay Lanes bowling alley in Hillsboro is open Fridays and Saturdays between Labor Day and Memorial Day.

Disc golf

Marion County Park and Lake, Peabody, and Hillsboro have disc golf courses.

Hillsboro gymnastics

Children’s gymnastics focus on developing core strength, balance, coordination, body control, and body awareness through the use of trampolines, power tumbling, exercises, and various other techniques. Classes take place at the fairgrounds on Thursdays in September and Tuesdays in October.

Cost is $45 for one child, $35 for a second child, $22.50 for a third child, and $25 for toddlers.

Martial arts

Hillsboro Recreation Commission and the Honorable Tiger School of Martial Arts offer a program taught by Sempai Mervin Lare, who is a second-degree black belt. Class times are Mondays and Thursdays, with beginners from 6 to 7 p.m. and advanced from 7 to 8 p.m. Cost is $40 per student. Additional family members living in the household are $20 if they sign up for monthly classes.

Dance

Studio 23 Dance in Hillsboro offers training in ballet, jazz, and tap. Classes are for age 2 through fifth grade.

Cost is $35 per month for preschoolers, $45 per month for older children. Classes will be at Studio 23, 107 Main Street.

Yoga

Intermediate Yoga classes are held at 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday evening in the meeting rooms at Hillsboro city hall. Cost is $5 per session for adults and $3 per session for high school and college students.

Exercise Room

Hillsboro High School strength-training facility is open to the public from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
