Courthouse lawsuit discussed

Staff writer

County commissioners met behind closed doors last Monday with Kansas City lawyer Kevin Case to discuss their response to a lawsuit filed after Peabody resident Donna Hague slipped and fell on a rug in the courthouse July 16, 2018.

The case is scheduled to go to trial in October.

Six months after filing the suit — and a year after she fell — Hague died from respiratory and heart ailments. The lawsuit was taken over by her husband, Rodney Hague.

The Hague family contends she fell on a wrinkled rug that was pushed up against a door frame in the courthouse.

The suit contends this amounted to negligence on the part of the county and seeks more than $75,000 for medical and surgical expenses, pain, suffering, disability, disfigurement, and loss of enjoyment of life.

The county contends the fall, and any damages that may have come from it, were caused by Hague’s inattentiveness.
