Marion

Heart of America League features some of the best runners in the class 2A, and Marion boys came into last week’s competition with a team goal of being in the top two.

Gavin Wasmuth medaled with 7th place, Luke Wessel in 10th, and Eli Klenda at 13th. Just missing a medal coming at 16th place was Christopher Beery. Tristen Dye finished 22nd. The team overall finished third, just five points away from its goal.

“We know what we must do now in the next couple of weeks to be able to reach our goal of making it to state,” coach Jason Hett said. “We were happy with the way we competed today but not satisfied. We know we can do it. It’s just going to take a little more mental toughness to break the wall.”

Regionals will be Saturday at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Strong City. The boys will run at 11:40 a.m.

Goessel

The Goessel boys and girls teams both secured first place in a Wheat State League cross country meet at Harvey County West Park. Teams needed at least three runners to compete as a team. The boys entered five athletes, and the girls entered six.

Delaney Gibson set a new standard for herself with a third place finish in 23:13.21. Cheyenne Sawyer was close behind in fifth place at 23:54.32, and Braylyn Hoopes finished ninth.

Javin Schmidt led the boys with a fourth place finish at 19:01.81. Joey Lapp ran his best time of the season at 19:27.99 for sixth place. Karl Raddatz came in eighth.

The Bluebird teams will run Saturday in Wichita at a 1A regional meet.
