Dale's Supermarket to move location after 58 years

Staff writer

Some people are known to fear change. Not Dale Franz, who will be going through a huge one when he officially moves his grocery store, Dale’s Supermarket, from its location in downtown Hillsboro to the former Heartland Grocery Store building in Hillsboro Heights.

Dale’s Supermarket has been at it’s current location since 1959.

Franz said customers could expect a bigger, nicer, newer building that will offer more of what the community wants.

“We’ll have more of a deli with chicken and bakery items,” Franz said, “and we’re looking at some sort of floral department.”

Most of the equipment for the new location also will be brand new. However, some equipment Franz wants to take with him.

“Some of the new cases, coolers, and freezers they’re looking at incorporating them somehow, too, so we can take those,” Franz said.

One item that won’t be in the new location will be the original meat counter, which was replaced a year ago.

“A local customer of ours said there was too much history in it to throw it away and took it home with them,” Franz said.

Franz said the new location would not be ready until late summer at the earliest.

“It’s not going to happen real quick,” Franz said. “We’ve got a lot of things we got to change and fix.”

Hillsboro mayor Delores Dalke was excited to hear about the move, even though it’s one more business leaving downtown Hillsboro.

“I think it’s wonderful because it’ll help the area by the highway,” Dalke said, “I also think it’s sad for downtown Hillsboro, but we want him to be successful no matter where he’s at.”
