Donald Klein

Marion native and Durham High School graduate Donald D. Klein, 82, a longtime Lyons and Nickerson resident who was a milkman for Tip Top Dairy and a butcher for Berridge’s IGA in Nickerson, died Saturday at Good Samaritan Center, Lyons.

Services were to be at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 13, 2014, at Lyons United Methodist Church, Lyons, with Susan Smith and the Rev. Brenda Davids officiating. Burial was to be at 2:30 p.m. today in Durham Park Cemetery, Durham.

Visitation was from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, at Birzer Funeral Home of Lyons. The family was to have been present from 5 to 7 p.m.

Born March 6, 1932 to Lester and Esther (Berg) Klein, he was a 1950 graduate of Durham High School and a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he served as a deacon.

He attended the United Methodist Church, Liar’s Fishing Club, and Dairy Queen Coffee Group, all of Lyons, and was a former Lyons city councilman.

He married Janet V. Rhode on June 17, 1951, in Marion. She died Aug. 19, 1966. He married V. Imogene (Van Arsdale) Harrison on July 21, 1967, in Lyons. She died Nov. 14, 2008.

A daughter, Rebecca Klein, and two step-grandchildren, Joshua Harrison and Stephanie Wood, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Dexter Klein, and his wife, Connie, of Dickinson, Texas; three daughters, Roxanne Pool and her husband, Thom, of Wichita, Susan Smith and her husband, Gary, of Lyons, and Jayne Young and her husband, Larry, of Wichita; two stepsons, Edward Harrison and Wes Harrison and his wife, Teri; a stepdaughter, Lynda Wood; a brother, Howard Klein and his wife, Shirley, of Herington; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Memorial funds have been established with Rice/Reno County Hospice and Lyons United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
