Driver arrested after hitting bridge

Allegedly left scene, found near post office

A Marion man was pulled over by police Saturday in the 400 block of E. Main St. after a police officer heard a crash and saw that the man was driving with only one working light.

Marion officer Peyton Heidebrecht was downtown when he heard a crash, interim police chief Zach Hudlin said Tuesday. Heidebrecht pulled over James R. Spohn, 25, who was driving eastbound on Main St.

The car Spohn was driving obviously had been damaged, Hudlin said, so Heidebrecht asked a deputy to go check the Cottonwood River bridge west of town.

A scar more than 14 feet long on the bridge showed where the bridge had been hit, Hudlin said.

Spohn was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, transporting an open container of alcohol, failing to stop at an accident, speeding, having no proof of liability insurance, and driving with a defective tail light.

Spohn was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Impala owned by Kara Druse of the same address.
